Five (5) deserving high school graduates from San Diego North County schools received college scholarship from the association. Their scholarships were granted during the June 7, 2014 Filipino Cultural Day Celebration.
AWARDING OF SCHOLARSHIPS
BRONTE BRILLANTES - 1st place - $1,000
Bronte was born in San Diego whose father is a Filipino. She has a 3.92 GPA from Mount Carmel High School. She is a role model to her friends and peers for she is a student leader who can balance the demands of her athletic, volunteer and academic lives. She is a Varsity Captain of Mt. Carmel HS Soccer, also involved in tract and lacrosse. She was awarded the Union Tribune Scholar Athlete and State of California Senate Certificate of Recognition – Outstanding Sun Devil Leadership award. She is also a Lifetime Member of the California Scholarship Federation, Founder and President of Mt. Carmel HS Build a Miracle club for 2 years, a Link Crew member, and involved with Fight Against Hunger Club and Friendship Club as Peer Buddy Leader. She babysits various children and plans to major in Cognitive Science so she could work with special children. She plans to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree from University of California Santa Cruz.

ALVIN JAY A. GO - 2nd place - $500
Alvin comes from a Filipino-Chinese family. He is a senior student from Poway High School and has a GPA of 4.13. He is the Graduation Honor Chair, member of the National Honor Society and Ranked 12th in National French Competition. He is the President of the Philosophy Club, ASB class secretary, Line Crew Leader and has volunteered over 80 hours of service to public library. He also serves at Casa de las Campanas retirement home. He plans to obtain his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of California Santa Cruz.
We also want to mention that he wrote an outstanding essay about world-renowned painter Pacita Abad as a role model for the youth of today. You can inspire a reader through your writing! We hope you more success, Alvin!

ROSE MARIE PAGUNSAN - 3rd place - $300
Rose’s parents are both Filipinos. She is a senior student of Oceanside High School and maintains a 3.98 GPA. She is a Simon Scholar, Girard Prep Scholar since 2011, member of National Honor Society, involved in Upward Bound and Junior Achievement since 2012. She also received President’s Awards in 2011-2013. She is the President of the Global Awareness Club from 2010-2014 and secretary of Scholars for Public Service. She excels in Math, thus, she plans to get her Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the UC Irvine this Fall.
Congratulations! We certainly want to see more female Civil Engineers, Rose!

SAMANTHA MONH - 4th place - $100
Samantha is a Senior at Vista High School and is a proud panther. In the fall, she will be attending Arizona State University and major in Business with an emphasis in Global Politics and possibly minor in a language. During her time in high school, she was able to complete the International Baccalaureate program and maintain a 4.0 throughout her high school career. She also was the President of Asian Pacific Student Union and secretary for Interact Club.
She intends to use her scholarship money to pay for her future text books and other necessities. Samantha would like to thank the Filipino American Cultural Organization (FACO) for putting on the scholarship, Vista’s College counselor Mrs. DePies for telling her about these opportunities and lastly, her parents and sister for always believing in her and preparing her for college.

NICHOLAS YANDALL
Special Citation
Nicholas is a student of Abraxas High, a Continuation High School in the Poway Unified School District. He stands out as a true leader in his school, an active member of ASB and the elite group of Abraxas Student Leadership Team which organizes school activities, blood drives, raising money for cancer research and even conducting new student orientation tours. He is very active in his church as well as FIL-AM organizations like the Mabuhay Club, where he has been a cultural dancer since 2010 and Samahan during his 9th and 10th grade. He is the executive member FORCE in Poway Unified School District. He is currently working at an assisted living facility for elderly people and plans to go to Palomar College this Fall to get a degree in Nursing.
